The preparation that happens before an interview is almost as important as the interview itself. Interviewers can often tell when you have taken the time to research and prepare for your interview.

Research the Role & Organization
Review the job description carefully to understand the responsibilities and skills required. Then, research the company mission, vision, and values. Try to look at their website and social media accounts. Identify how your skills and experiences match the needs of the company you’ve looked into.
Prepare Your Questions
Have at least 5 thoughtful questions ready to ask. Use your research and the job description to guide your choices. Examples: “How is success measured in this role?” or “What are the biggest priorities for the team right now?”
Using the STAR method
Behavioral-based questions help interviewers see how your past performance predicts your future potential. Using the STAR method will help you to answer these types of questions.
Example: Tell me about a conflict you’ve faced when working on a team. How did you handle it?
S – Situation: Set the stage. Provide enough context for your story.
T – Task: Explain the specific project, problem, or responsibility.
A – Action: Describe the steps you personally took.
R – Results: Share the outcome and what you learned.
STAR Method Tips:
- Think of examples from jobs, classes, organizations, or volunteer activities.
- Address each STAR element in your answer.
- Aim for 1–2 minutes per answer; too much detail can lose the interviewer’s interest.
- Pick stories that directly connect to the skills and qualities listed in the job description.
Follow-up after the interview
- Send a thank you email within 24 hours.
- Reference a topic from your conversation, but keep it brief.
- Reaffirm your interest in the role and appreciation for their time.
