Medical Humanities and Health Studies

Medical Humanities and Health Studies Program

Are you looking for a career in medicine and want a better understanding of health care beyond just science? At the IU School of Liberal Arts Medical Humanities and Health Studies (MHHS) you can add a valuable human perspective to your medical professional career with degree choices at the undergraduate and graduate level.

The B.A. and B.S. in Medical Humanities and Health Studies (MHHS) are unique, being among the first comprehensive MHHS degrees offered to undergraduates nationwide.

Our program includes courses that help you explore medicine, health, and illness through the lens of the humanities and social sciences. You’ll discover how health care connects to people’s lives, cultures, and communities, not just clinical facts.

Our faculty come from across IU Indianapolis and bring real-world experience in healthcare, teaching, and research. They will help you sharpen your critical thinking, cultural awareness, and empathy as you prepare for the real challenges of today’s health and legal fields.

Career paths for Medical Humanities majors

If you're planning a career in medicine or a health-related field, MHHS can enrich your education in medicine, allied health professions, dentistry, health law, medical social work, nursing, public health, public policy studies, and social/economic research.

Many of our graduates go on to advanced degrees in pharmacy, medicine, occupational therapy, law, and other health professions, with a strong foundation in what it means to care for people.
