Transfer students with more than one semester of college credit at another institution sometimes need individual attention to ensure a smooth transfer.

Questions about which writing courses are required for particular majors or degrees should be addressed to advisors in the schools because writing course requirements are established by degree-granting schools (the School of Nursing, for example), not by the English department or the writing program.

For answers to questions frequently asked by transfer students, see the following links:

Course Transfers

Transfer credit is evaluated first in the Office of Admissions.  Sometimes transfer students find that their courses don’t transfer in the ways they would like, or policies at other universities regarding credit are different from those at IUPUI.

If you have taken a writing course at another university, which has transferred as an undistributed English credit--not as credit for the course you expected it to--you should complete a comparable credit petition and return it to the writing program office located in CA 343 (317 274-3824). This petition is available in the office and online at

http:writing.iupui.edu/comparable_credit.htm

Students who need a comparable credit petition or information about the special credit portfolio don’t necessarily need to see a faculty member; Vicki Hale, the writing program secretary, can provide the forms and answer general questions.  Stephen Fox, Director of Writing, and Mary Sauer, Associate Director of Writing, are available to handle questions as needed.

Students petitioning for comparable credit will need to provide at least the official bulletin description of the other university’s course.  If possible, students should also provide a course syllabus and work from the course.  The comparable credit form is a simple one and should answer students’ questions.

While there is no guarantee that comparable credit and special credit petitions will be successful, many petitions are, and all petitions are handled promptly.

Transfer students should also consult with the writing program if they tested out of a writing course at another university (or were given credit for it because of SAT/ACT scores, etc.) See the section below on "Credit for Composition Courses on the basis of examination."

Credit on the Basis of Examination

With a score of 4 or 5 on the AP exam in English Language and Composition, students receive credit for Elementary Composition I (W131) from IUPUI and do not need to take the class. IUPUI does not give credit for introductory composition courses on the basis of CLEP exams or SAT/ACT scores.

Special Credit on the Basis of Student's Portfolio

Although IUPUI does not give credit for introductory composition courses on the basis of CLEP exams or SAT/ACT scores, transfer students who were given credit for introductory composition courses at their previous institutions on the basis of CLEP or SAT/ACT scores (and have successfully completed more than one semester of college) are eligible to apply for special credit for Elementary Composition I (W131) by submitting a portfolio of their writing. This option is also available to transfer students whose writing courses from the previous institution did not transfer to IUPUI as W131. Please contact the writing program office for information about submitting the portfolio (317-274-3824) or check the following website:

http://writing.iupui.edu/special_credit.htm

Students are not granted exemption from Elementary Composition II (W132), or Professional Writing Skills (W231) on the basis of any exam, including the Dantes Exam. If transfer students have taken a comparable class at another school, they may submit a comparable credit petition to have writing program committee consider granting them comparable credit on the sole basis that the course taken at the other school is indeed comparable in goals, assignments, and curriculum to the course in question at IUPUI. Click here to see the section on course transfers.

Course Placement:

At IUPUI students do not take a placement test. They self-place themselves into one of three levels of composition classes. Transfer Students who are required to take Elementary Composition I (because they were not given credit for an introductory composition course at another university) should visit the following website for information about IUPUIs "self-placement" process:

http://english.uc.iupui.edu/

The on-line Self-Placement Process consists of three steps. First, students review information that will help them evaluate their writing skills. Second, students read the information provided about the three first-year writing classes offered at IUPUI. Third, students record their selection on an on-line survey. Students must follow these steps on the web site before seeing their advisors, and they are welcome to call the Writing Program office at 317-274-3824 if they have any questions.

Transferring to IUPUI from IUB:  the IUPUI English Composition Requirement (W131):

IU-Bloomington has more options for satisfying first-semester composition requirements than does IUPUI.  The table below explains the differences between the two campus' policies. Note: Grades of C- or lower will not fulfill IUPUI requirements.

IU--Bloomington Composition Policies IUPUI Policies
SAT, ACT, and AP scores. Students scoring 670 or above on the SAT Verbal Examination, or 32 or above on the ACT English Composition section are exempt from Composition

Students scoring 4 to 5 on the Advanced Placement English Composition section, are exempt from English composition.

SAT, ACT, and AP scores
IUPUI does not award composition credit based on SAT/ACT scores.  Transfer students may submit a special credit petition portfolio.

Students who score 4 or 5 on the AP English Composition exam receive credit for English W131

Courses

Students may take any of the following courses, with a C- or better, to satisfy their composition requirement:

a. English W110 (primarily for Collins cluster students) (3 cr.)

b. English W131 (3 cr.)

c. English W170 (3 cr.)

d. English L141 and L142 (4-4 cr.)

e. Afro-American Studies A141-A142 (4-4 cr.)

f. Two semesters of English W143 (1 cr.), combined with two introductory courses (3 cr.) from the following

      Comparative Literature C145, C146;

Slavic Languages and Literatures R145, R146.

g. A combination of any two courses from d, e, and f above.

Courses

Most schools at IUPUI require students to pass their first semester composition course with a C or better.  A C- in the IUB course will not satisfy IUPUI requirements.

Most schools require either English W131 or English W140 (honors composition).  The Department of English recommends that schools count any of the IU--Bloomington courses listed at right, with a C or better, as equivalent to English W131 or W140.  This decision is, of course, up to the degree-granting school.
